To provide a glimpse into life at Datahouse, we interviewed Lucas Torres, one of our team members in Lisbon, Portugal. He shared his inspiring journey from Rio de Janeiro to Lisbon and how his experiences have shaped his professional and personal growth.

Work Culture: From Rio to Lisbon

Having worked in both Brazil and Portugal, Lucas notes striking similarities and fascinating differences in work culture.

“In Rio, work-life balance is essential, and I see the same emphasis here in Portugal. Taking time to enjoy a coffee break or lunch with colleagues fosters a supportive and enjoyable atmosphere. What stands out in Lisbon is the multicultural, international environment driven by global projects and businesses.”

Lucas Torres, Senior Software Engineer, Datahouse Portugal

The fusion of local and global cultures creates a dynamic workplace, making every day a learning experience.

Living in Lisbon: Hidden Gems and Adventures

Lisbon’s charm lies in its vibrant neighborhoods and picturesque landscapes. Lucas recommends exploring the city’s iconic viewpoints:

“Miradouro da Graça and Santa Catarina are perfect spots to watch the sunset with a coffee or a beer. For a peaceful escape, I love visiting Gulbenkian Garden to relax with a book.

But my favorite activity is surfing at Costa da Caparica, just across the bridge—it’s been an amazing adventure!”

Balancing Ambitions: Work and a Master’s in Software Development

As he prepares to start a master’s program at NOVA, one of Lisbon’s top universities, balancing work and study is both challenging and rewarding.

“The master’s program is expanding my knowledge and connecting me with like-minded individuals. Datahouse supports me every step of the way, from covering part of my tuition to guiding my final project. My manager has been instrumental in creating a plan that aligns with my career and educational goals. Furthermore, his enthusiasm and support have been super motivating and inspiring as I take this big step.”

This support reflects Datahouse’s commitment to fostering employee growth.

Collaboration Across Borders: Working with an International Team

Collaboration with the Swiss team has been a highlight of his journey at Datahouse.

“The Swiss team’s organized and direct communication style is complemented by their friendliness and support.  I’ve had the opportunity to meet them in person on several occasions, and they are truly welcoming people. The cultural exchange within our international team adds immense value, enhancing both professional skills and personal insights.”

Exciting Projects: Learning and Innovating

When asked about the most rewarding project, he recalled a significant client onboarding initiative:

“Integrating a new client database into our Dimensions platform was a challenging yet rewarding experience. It deepened my understanding of application architecture and API performance. Now, I’m excited to contribute to a new tool that will make client onboarding faster and more customizable.”

This project exemplifies how challenges at Datahouse lead to growth and innovation.

Fostering Growth: Mentorship and Team Support

The supportive environment at Datahouse plays a pivotal role in his development as a software engineer.

“From day one, the team has been collaborative and welcoming. Mentorship from my line manager has been a cornerstone of my professional growth, encouraging me to take on new challenges with confidence.”

Advice for Future Team Members

For those from Brazil or other Portuguese-speaking countries considering joining Datahouse, Lucas emphasize the inclusive and collaborative nature of the workplace:

“While English is often the main language, we still use Portuguese around the Lisbon office. The environment is friendly and fosters cultural exchange, enriching both our professional and personal lives.”

Exploring Rio and Niterói: A Taste of Home

Reflecting on his roots in Niterói, Lucas shares must-visit spots for anyone traveling to Rio:

“Icaraí Beach offers stunning sunsets, and the Museum of Contemporary Art is an architectural gem by Oscar Niemeyer. For beach lovers, Itacoatiara Beach is a slice of paradise, perfect for a swim and enjoying local flavors by the shore.”
