Datahouse Diaries: A Conversation across time with Diogo

22 Oct 25

What if you could sit down with your past self, the one just starting out, full of questions, doubts, and dreams?

In this edition of Datahouse Diaries, we imagined what that conversation might sound like for Diogo, one of the most recent additions to our Lisbon team. From biotechnology to software, from Portugal to Belgium to China and back again, Diogo’s story is one of curiosity, growth, and connection.

From Science to Software

Before becoming a developer, Diogo’s path began in the classroms of Vila Real, Portugal, before continuing with a Master’s degree in Belgium. With a strong interest in both biology and tech, he set out to combine the two, until one side eventually won out.

PAST DIOGO: “You studied biotechnology. How did you end up writing code in real estate tech?

PRESENT DIOGO: “Great question. Back then, I was drawn to both biology and technology. I studied biotechnology partly in Belgium, which gave me a broader cultural and academic perspective. But the more I explored, the more I realised that tech is where I felt most alive. Eventually, I shifted into software engineering and I’ve never looked back.

Finding the Right Team

Starting a new role means more than just getting used to codebases. For Diogo, it was about finding the right people and the right rhythm.

PAST DIOGO: “Why Datahouse? What made it different from other companies?

PRESENT DIOGO: “It wasn’t just the tech stack, though that’s top-notch. It was the culture. From day one, I felt like I joined a real team. People here care. They collaborate, they laugh together, they help each other grow. That’s rare and incredibly motivating.”

A Win Worth Celebrating

You never forget your first achievement in a new job. For Diogo, that moment came early and left a mark.

PAST DIOGO: “What was one thing that made you proud early on?

PRESENT DIOGO: “Completing a property valuation with close to zero real estate experience. It reminded me how far I’ve come in learning quickly and adding value.”

Beyond the Code

PAST DIOGO: “What’s life like outside of work now?”

PRESENT DIOGO: “I spend my free time climbing, hitting the gym, playing piano, and travelling. China recently left a big impression on me. Also walking my dog Benny. If you count time spent, it’s definitely a hobby!”

Purpose in Progress

PAST DIOGO: “What drives you these days?”

PRESENT DIOGO: “Peace and purpose. I want to feel immersed, valued, and helpful. My dream of living all over the world still motivates me. This is just the beginning.”

The Power of Asking

Some lessons you learn the hard way. Others you pick up in five minutes, from a teammate or across a quick message.

PAST DIOGO: “What surprised you most since joining?”

PRESENT DIOGO: “How helpful people are, across teams, roles, and even countries. Sometimes all it takes is a quick conversation to unlock a problem.”

Hosting the Lisbon Way

Lisbon through Diogo’s eyes is all about flavour, feeling, and sharing the best the city has to offer.

PAST DIOGO: “Last question. You’ve got a colleague visiting from Zurich. What’s your perfect day in Lisbon?

PRESENT DIOGO:” Easy: beach day, dinner at a traditional restaurant with wine tasting, and drinks at a rooftop bar overlooking the city. That’s the Lisbon I’ve come to love.

Final Thought

PRESENT DIOGO: “So, what do you think: Ready to join us? If you’re looking for a place that values growth, culture, and real connection, you might just feel at home here too.”
